Translations and Abbreveations

posts: 154 United Kingdom

What is it with the continuous use of abbreveations throughout tiki? This must cause real problems for the translators. An example I have come across is the {tr}act{/tr} could be activity or it could be action or it could be active.
In tiki-g-monitor_activities.tpl it is pressumably activity or activities.
In tiki-g-monitor_processes.tpl it is active.
Why use abbreveations anyway? Surely it would be a much more proffesional feel than having loads of different abbreveations all over the site.
Some of the abbreveations are stupid though like adm why not just use admin? You have a translation for this and it is only in one tpl why not just change it in the tpl instead of making every translator change it? (tiki-forums.tpl if you want to know)
I really wish someone would come up with a standard to implement throughout Tiki.

I agree with you
There is inconsistency between abbreviation and the abbreviation are impossible to translate.
THe best think I was thinking about is to introduce a new parameter to our translation function {tr} with something {tr abbrev=Activity}Act{/tr} that means that Activity must ne abbreviated in the translation.
This will not change the English strings; And the language.php will have something another variable &abbre={"Activity"=>"act"}
It seams easy to develop but very large job to update the strings

Hi,

I have the same problem as maintainer of the Dutch (NL) translation. I think the main reason for using abbreviations is to save on space when trying to cram definitions into table headings etc. Not sure if I fully understand sylvie's suggestiom but it sounds interesting.

Regards,

Pat.
