Newbie Question: How to insert Chinese characters in an English document

Hi

I am trying to insert some Chinese characters, for example, ??, in the wiki editor, when I save the page, the characters become question marks like this ??. Is there some configuration that I have to set?

Could be a database issue (i.e. make sure the database is the correct character encoding like UTF8, thus able to handle Chinese characters).

I've never really used the internationalization features so I don't know if there's something you have to configure there.

Thanks for the quick reply. With phpMyAdmin, I can see that the collation is set to latin1_swedish_ci in all the columns in all the tables. Anyone knows how to set it to UTF8?

  1. Open PHPmyAdmin
  2. Click your Tiki database from the left hand side
  3. Click the "operations" tab
  4. At the bottom of the page is a section called "collation" and you should be able to select UTF8 here(I usually select "UTF8 General").
  5. Click the "go" button.

I think you're done.

Darkbee, remember that any problem related to charsets, should be fixed properly everywhere, in case you want to fix (or suggest others to fix) manually.

Afaik, there are three places to convert Tiki to successfully use utf-8 everywhere:
(1) Database collation
(2) Database tables
(3) Content of all db tables.

when you do that through running an upgrade with the tiki-install.php (in Tiki 5.1+), tiki can do the three things for you.
If you do them manually, you can fairly easily do (1) (as you say above), do (2) by changing all tables to utf-8 (a bit tedious with phpmyadmin), but for (3) there doesn't seem to be an easy way, other than the built-in process in tiki-install.php

So please, keep this in mind when you answer to other people, or when you have a look at the Documenation pages in order to ensure that they are updated with the latest procedures in case someone wants to do things manually for some reason.

so in short, kiatng, welcome to Tiki Community! smile

and please, follow a standard Upgrade process to Tiki 5.3 while forcing your db connection to be utf-8 and convert everywhere where you are allowed by tiki-install.php things to utf-8

Report back if any issues, and please, consider updating the Documentation pages if there is any missleading information there which doesn't comply with your own experience to fix your problem and these rough guidelines above.

Thanks!

@Xavier de Pedro I did a reinstall of the DB and now the collation is UTF-8, and I tested it and it worked perfectly now. Thanks.

Here're the steps as I can recall (may not be chronologically correct)
1. Run the installer
2. Remove the lock file in he folder db
3. Run the installer again
4. Verify DB connection
5. Click on Upgrade somewhere
6. Confirm to reinstall DB and lose everything
7. Check UTF-8 (it was default checked) somewhere
8. After a few moment, the DB is reinstalled
9. Fill some forms and click continue

@Darren, thanks also for your help.
