phony users

My website (http://www.progressiveomaha.com/tikidir/ running Tikiwiki 5.1), has been acquiring dozens of new users per day recently. However, they rarely validate their email address; also, a number of them are from fast cash locations in the UK. I've disabled the tell-a-friend utility since I also seem to have been reported as a spammer.

Is there anything else I should disable, change or be aware of that might be allowing spammers to use my website? I've been able to get myself unblocked in the past by talking to my web hosting service, but I want to be sure I've covered all the bases before I do that.

Thanks for any help.

I would upgrade to the current Tiki release. Tiki 5 hasn't been supported for quite a while and is missing several important security updates, including blocking false registrations.

I upgraded to 6.8 but there is no CAPTCHA or RECAPTCHA feature for registrations so I imagine it will be but a short time before the spambots figure out how to put a phony email address along with the username and password. I had to delete some 800 registrations that came about 10 a day. This is not good.

How do you set it up? I did a search for CAPTCHA in the documentation and the tikiwiki website and came up with nothing.

Thanks. The instructions didn't say anything about CAPTCHA bein available for registration, so I was confused.

But now it's working.
