What version of Tiki are you running?
If you are running a later version then there has been great improvements in the search thanks to a feature called Unified Search.
If you go to your admin panel and then click on search
./tiki-admin.php?page=search
You will be able to turn on Unified Search

We have done some very complex projects that required powerful search capabilities and Unified Search has been able to deliver the performance we needed.
