Looking for info on "cache" feature

TikiWiki 1.8.3. - I'm currently trying to boost our rather slow performance without bugging our provider (I want to make sure I've optimized anything possible on my side first) and stumbled over a feature named "cache" on the wiki admin page. I blindly switched it on and things seem to speed up considerably... however, I'd be very interested in understanding how this feature works and found no info in the docs or the forum. There's one setting named "global cache: x minutes" and another one named: individual cache on/off". And when editing a page there's another cache setting for that one. Can someone explain to me what these settings do or point me to a doc?

Thanks,
Hagix

This is the cache of the HTML generated by Wiki pages.
If you write in a Wiki page
normal, ''italic''
this WikiSyntax has to be parsed so that Tiki sends to browsers something like
normal, < i>italic< /i>
This parsing is done by tikilib's monster function parse_data.
When you cache Wiki pages, the parsing is done once and the HTML output saved in database for further accesses to that page. The next parsing will occur after the "global cache" setting time. Parsing again after some time avoids that the output becomes outdated (the parsing output depends on the rest of the Tiki).
You could probably set a cache of one day for mature sites. Hardly hit pages (c.e. HomePage, etc.) can be set more carefully with individual cache.

Thanks, very helpful! The longest possible time in Tiki 1.8.3 is 2 hours btw. One more question: The cached HTML is apparently updated whenever the page is changed (I looked into the database to verify that). So under which circumstances could the output be outdated?

Thanks,
Hagix
