Outlining in TikiWiki

I was wondering if it is possible to use an Outline format in the Wiki?

So I can organize my Wiki in a legal style outline format?

Try the STRUCTURES feature - dig into that, it might just meet your needs. See StructureDoc and StructureDev for info on Structures.

> Also, where can I find plugins for tikiwiki?

Besides the standard Wiki Plugins (located in your site's lib/wiki_plugins folder, you can also check out my new site, TikiMODS.comQuestion.

Can you give an example of this format? What kind of indentation, item styling, etc.? Text can't be indented "manually" on a wiki page, but Tiki can do normal HTML list styles. And other tags or plugins could probably be used to cover layout that Tiki doesn't do normally. Apart from using a section-numbering system, I'm not sure what legal formatting involves, though, so more details would be helpful.

Hi Gary:

Truth be told I prefer the style of Wikipedia. Where they use an outline format... for example:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IndustryQuestion

Contents

1 List of industries and prominent companies
1.1 Information (51)
1.1.1 >Telecommunications
1.2 Finance and Insurance (52)
1.3 Health Care and Social Assistance (62)
1.3.1 >Pharmaceuticals
1.4 Manufacturing (31-33)
1.4.1 >Chemical production
1.4.2 >Steel production
2 Marxism and industry
3 See also
4 External links

Does that help?

Also, where can I find plugins for tikiwiki? I Googled but found nothing satisfactory.

Using the {maketoc} tag and normal headline tags produces this:

1 List of industries and prominent companies

1.1 Information (51)

1.1.1 >Telecommunications

1.2 Finance and Insurance (52)

1.3 Health Care and Social Assistance (62)

1.3.1 >Pharmaceuticals

1.4 Manufacturing (31-33)

1.4.1 >Chemical production

1.4.2 >Steel production

2 Marxism and industry

3 See also

A little too big and bold for my taste, but can be adjusted with the stylesheet for the theme. {maketoc} generates the page contents list automatically, and the headline sizes you would indicate as you enter your text, using the wiki headline syntax.

Most plugins are in the Tikiwiki archive that you download, either in the lib/wiki-plugins directory (which are automatically activated) or in lib/wiki-plugins-dist, which is for plugins that have one issue or another, like maybe should only be used in secure intranets, etc. To see what is available at your site, edit a new wiki page and put {PLUGINMANAGER()}{PLUGINMANAGER} in it.

Hi Gary,

I find that after creation of the toc, the main text is very cluttered between the 2 headings and its sub-headings. Is there any way to make a line break between heading 1 amd 1.1 or between 2 and 3??

The easiest way to increase that space is probably to specify a line-height for header styles in the theme's stylesheet (e.g., styles/tikineat.css). Something like:

Copy to clipboard
h2 { font-family: Georgia, Times, serif; font-size: 20px; line-height: 40px; /* line height added. */ }

About twice the font size seems like a good place to start. Note that some styles may have .wikitext h1, h2, h3, h4 selectors in addition to the basic h1, h2, h3, h4 ones. If so, they are the ones to edit.

Ok, I found the structures...

The current documentation does not do a great job of explaining how to use the Interface controls, I am confused. If you can see the attached image, how would I use the controls to indent item 2 under item 1 so that it becomes 1.1?

I am a newbie and appreciate your help.

Hi Gary:

Thanks for the info, I think that would work great. If it is not too much trouble, can you show me the code that was used in your example?

Thanks again.

This is just the standard wiki syntax for headings of different levels that you'd use for your outline headings, and a {maketoc} tag at the top to make the table of contents for the page. The layout of the table of contents depends on the levels of the headings used. Normally Tiki style sheets define h1 to h4. You could add h5 and h6 if you needed to, following the pattern in the style sheet. If a theme is rendering the headings too large for your taste, you could edit its style sheet.
