    Think this is a php / MySQL communication issue.

    Possible solutions include
    recompiling your php4 (I guess) with the mysqli extension
    switching to php5 with the newer mysqli extension
    or add
    --old-passwords
    to your my.cnf after upgrading to MySQL 5
