Is the performance different than with tikineat theme? It should be the same (ie, not dependent on the theme) Enable the footer stats and look at the db accesses.
Personally, I use Firefox with either EditCSS or Firebug plugins to test CSS changes. That is the easiest way to find these types of problems.
Do you still have any issues with the theme?
