Upload Failed to Directory Setup

OK, guys... Here's another one for you:

Because I want to be able to access uploaded images via FTP, so that I can bulk transfer them at times, I want to use a directory instead of the database to store them.

For some reason, though, when I set up a directory below the www root and list it the directory path in the Admin File Galleries dialog (imagegal\), it fails to work.

More specifically, when I try to upload a file, I simply get an "upload failed" error message.

I've tried entering:

imagegal\
imagegal
\imagegal\
\imagegal
public_html\imagegal
www\imagegal

Nothing works.

The permissions on imagegal are set to CHMOD 777.

ANY IDEAS?

Oh, jeez... How embarrasing!

Still, now I have another problem. It seems that while I can upload files to the file gallery, I cannot view them when I click on their icon.

More specifically, when I click on the document link in the list of files, I get a dialogue box asking me to choose whether to Open or Save the file. When I choose Open, it proceeds to launch the hosting application, eg Adobe Acrobat, but then puts up a message box saying, "There was an error opening this document. File does not exist."

This doesn't happen when the files were uploaded directly into the db, as opposed to putting them in a separate directory.

Ideas, oh wise TikiWiki gurus?
