cheers guys,

i am hoping someone here is able and willing to help me. i teach high school english in a poor school in northern california. i use tiki for my classroom and bluehost is my provider. so much for all of the irrelevant information.

here is the non-technical language. my tiki simply disappears on me. when i go to log on, the homepage is not available. the title of the page is broadcast, but nothing else.

i can follow directions but i do not understand php or sql or any other technicalese.

please help if you can.

thanks,
derrick

From your earlier posts I see you have been using Tiki for a while. Are you still on Tiki 5? Or have you upgraded to a newer version?
You say "when I go to log on", does that mean the home page is blank when you first go to your site, or does it disappear when you click on the "log on" drop down on the home page, or after you have entered your username and password in the drop down and clicked "log in"?
Did you recently change your home page?

If it disappears before you enter your username and password, does this URL bring up a login page, or is it empty too?
http://yourdomainname/tiki-login_scr.php

If the page disappears after you enter your username and password, either on the home page or using the login page from the link above, then, assuming you did get logged in, enter the URL below on the address bar of blank page and hit enter.
http://yourdomainname/tiki-listpages.php
Does that list your Tiki's pages? If it does, there should be an edit icon you can click on to edit the home page and remove whatever is breaking it. I recommend right clicking on the edit icon and opening the edit session in a new page.

You should log in to your bluehost cpanel control panel and look in the "Error logs" for any error messages your access attempts are generating.

in this second and more thorough response, i answer your questions:

1. I am using tiki 8.3 on this site.
2. the home page is blank, though the title of the page and its background color are visible.
3. i did not recently change my home page.
4. the login page is also empty.
5. i am not able to log in at all, even when i go directly to the login page. it too is blank.

thanks again for any assistance you can provide.

hi rick,

what an honor! i used your book to put up my first tiki. thanks for replying to my SOS.

the site is http://www.derrickallums.com/kippking/

how can i turn on error reporting if i can't get "into" the tiki?

thanks again,
derrick

hey guys,

when i ran the tiki-installer to turn on error reporting, the tiki was resuscitated. it seems to be working fine now.

can either of you explain what happened?

i did increase the memory, rick, but before going into the installer, the memory increase seemed to have no effect. did i need to run the installer for the tiki to register the change?

thanks for your help,
derrick

Unfortunately, without seeing the Tiki error messages, there's no way to tell what the problem was... it could even have been an issue with your site host — unrelated to Tiki.

You can confirm the amount of PHP memory that Tiki has available by using phpinfo, as illustrated here...

Anyway, I'm glad you're site s back up (and that you found my books useful!).

Hi derrick,

Unfortunately those error messages don't appear to have anything to do with your Tiki problem.

I have looked at your website and I found something interesting, your list blogs page works (http://yourdomainname/tikifolder/tiki-list_blogs.php) and it appears to have a working "log in" drop down.

It looks like you have not updated your home pages since last August. Did you recently upgrade to Tiki 8.3? Or did you change the menu or any modules recently?

hi again tomjarvis,

yes, i upgraded to 8.3 about a month ago, if memory serves. my home page is static. it does not change since it contains links to static pages that students use regularly.

i have added blogs recently but nothing more.

thanks again for your help.
