Project Description at FrOSCon
[+]
Tiki is a webbased, multilingual content management system with an integrated set of comprehensive groupware features. Tiki is based on a systemwide available WikiSyntax. The system includes also a WikiSyntax compatible CKE based richtext editor.
Tiki is free software and can be downloaded and used at no charge. The project is actively developed and maintained by a large international community since 13 years.
Tiki contains hundreds of integrated features. On the contrary to other content management systems the Tiki project follows an "all-in-one" design approach, with the result that it is not necessary to search for external modules, addons, plugins, respectively extensions, for which the further development is often not ensured and which can cause problems in connection with upgrades of the main application.
At Tiki we develop the complete source code over the years and we attach great importance to the fact that standard compliant websites can be upgraded even after several years, even when the technical base did heavly evolve in the meantime. Thus it is indeed possible to upgrade a ("non-forked") Tiki version 2 in only few steps to a current version Tiki 15, getting modern responsive design versions of most of the original legacy themes.
With Tiki it is possible to create besides usual websites all sorts of collaborative projects. To mention a few examples: Knowledgebases, Intranet, Extranets, Conference Registration, Support Forum with Bugtracker, and many more.
In case Tiki would not (yet) offer a feature for a project (completely), new developers, whether well-versed hobbyists, as well as self-employed freelancers or developers from a company background are welcomed and encouraged to commit their enhancements to the main upstream rather than projecting seperate development paths. The community has some experience to cooperate with companies and consultants, in order that in context of longterm maintenance of the further developed software synergy effects and win-win-situations are created.
As an example, of course it is possible for an experienced user to implement external jQuery plugins and to develop themes at his own. A themes shop is under development.
The graphical elements in Tiki are build with the Bootstrap3 framework. We use the template engine Smarty.
The complete default templates as well as the themes (optionally with customised templates and custom JS ... self-contained) are built with Smarty and HTML5 and contain additionally to feature specific selectors as well as the Bootstrap selectors. Thus the creation of new themes was massively simplified in the last two years.
Tiki's code is based on PHP5 and MySQL5 and uses quite a lot JavaScript and jQuery. Tiki is scalable and thus as well appropriate for shared hosting as for standalone fully fletched root servers. The installation of Tiki is possible from a compressed dowwnload (ex. .zip-file) or directly from svn or git (the latter currently without commit).
Notes to the versions:
The last version with classic design system Tiki12 LTS needs at least PHP5.3
The current versions Tiki14 (soon terminating) and Tiki15 (future LTS) need PHP5.5
With Tiki15 we switched from Zend1 (zf1) to Zend2 (zf2)
Prospects:
In the development version Tiki trunk (pre-16) we already integrated ths PHP-PDF-library mPDF as API. Due to licence restrictions it is necessary to subsequently install mPDF manually, which can be accomplished in three easy steps in only one or two minutes. Thereby it is for the first time possible to print the pages directly from the website as PDF document out-of-the-box without external services and even on shared hosting.
An implementation of CalDav/CardDav to extend the calendar feature is currently in development, which will complete the groupware features.
