Help: Internal server error

I have just taken over as administrator of our tiki site and have very little knowledge of tiki at this stage. I would really appreciate any assistance with an error that has just started appearing when you try to log in to the site. It says:
------
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster at yesalumni.net and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
-------
ANYTHING anyone could tell me about what this might mean would be great. The service provider says all is ok from their end.
THank you....

Check the apache error logs for a clue. That error message does not mean anything.

You could also check that the PHP memory_limit is more than 8Mb. Tiki does requires at least 12 or 16Mb to function correctly. If your on shared hosting this could be the problem.

Damian & friends

I am trying to help yesalumninet solving the server problem. The Internal Server Error occurs right after logging in (so should be in tiki-login.php?). What I found out from the web provider is this:

1. memory_limit

He tried setting it to 16M, then restart Apache. No improvement. Set it back to default (12M) which should be fine anyway.

2. Apache error logs

The web provider sent us this excerpt from the logs (he tried logging in as well). I am not familiar with Apache Interna, so aside from the "500" at the end of the excerpt, I do not get much from the return codes. Some hints on how to interpret the log and then how to proceed would be very much appreciated!

It seems the requests which I put in a box are triggering the error. Does anybody know what "302 38" denotes?

Thanks a lot for your help!

You need the apache error log, not the access log.

YOu'll find details of the apache error codes on httpd.apache.org

Hi Damian & friends

Here are the error logs:

FATAL: emalloc(): Unable to allocate 40 bytes
Fri Nov 12 16:21:44 2004 error client 84.72.7.242 Premature end of script headers: /usr/local/webcontrol/cgi-sys/php-wrap
Fri Nov 12 16:21:44 2004 error client 84.72.7.242 File does not exist: /home/yesalumninet/public_html/live//500.shtml

AFAI can see, the problem seems to lie in PHP on the server. But the web provider says: «I tried it even with "memory_limit = 20M" in PHP: same problem.»

Thanks for any further hint!

Look at my story in TikiFriendlyHosts about 1and1.com. php was installed in a cgi...

In your error message, you have "cgi-sys"... So php memory limit is cached by the processus memory limit ....
I hope for you it is not the case

Try a little program in php that allocates 10Mb
