Creating a File Hierarchy

I'm new to Tikiwiki and am trying to figure out how I can create an easy to use file hierarchy. The main purpose of the system is to allow all users to share files. As such they need to be able to create directories (i.e. folders) and add content. I don't see any way to nest file galleries. Can I do this with structures? And if I do how can users easily create their own folders.

Ideally I'd like to create a base set of parent folders in which users can add whatever folders and files they wish.

Tiki's file galleries can't be nested (last time I checked). In any case, Tiki uses the database to store files (or their paths if directory storage is used) so users have no way to use directories/folders directly. Structures are only for wiki pages. I guess you could make a hierarchy of wiki pages using a structure, and have files as attachments to the wiki pages. This would work if the visual presentation is acceptable. The (text) content of the wiki page could be a description of that particular "file folder" (i.e., wiki page and file attachments).

Another option, Mike, besides Gary's, is creating a category tree, and adding a file gallery on each node of that category tree. See doc.tw.o for more info about categories:

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I tried the Wiki route with structures and file attachments but it's a bit cumbersome. I'll try out the category idea soon.

Cheers.

Categories are really the way to go, but you've got to spend some time coming up with a good taxonomy. Then it's up to your users to actually -use- the categories. Good luck!
