newb question: edit CSS FAIL

When I attempted to edit the CSS for a theme (default.css and default2.css), the entire css functionality was lost.

How do I repair this? And how can I modify the CSS without losing the entire style sheet?

I'm trying to attach a screenshot of the selection "edit CSS" which caused this, so we're crystal clear on what I did.

Thank you for any help — my first post here, and sadly, it won't be my last!

I apologize for posting this to usability/features, I intended it for templates/CSS; I don't know whether I should repost or whether an admin can move it.

The onsite edit-css feature isn't working in TikiWiki 2, as far as I know. You'll need to edit your CSS files locally and ftp them to the server.

If your site currently isn't working because it's trying to use a bad css file, maybe you can use a url like "www.example.com/tiki-switch_theme.php?theme=tikinewt.css" to activate another style sheet. Or in Opera you can switch View >> Style to User mode. Or you can use phpMyAdmin to edit your database directly to change the default theme. I can give more info on that method if you need it.

Hi Gary,

I'm also a newbie. Thanks for your contributions and expertise

I also had the same problem and noticed that the css file is 0 bytes.
When I restored the file the "look and feel" was restored.

I am trying "tikipedia" and I want to reduce the whitespace between the Page Title and the top of the box. There seems to be about an inch of space. I also noticed that the word (Cached) appears in that space. Is there any way to configure this? ( you can see this on my site WikiSicha.org)

I also noticed that there is a dark line above the box. I don't know how to remove this.

Finally, in Wikipedia, there is login on the top left of the page. Is there any way to get this in Tikipedia?

Thanks

what you really want to do is edit the template for the stylesheet you're using. First, find the template that its using (they usually have obvious names - sounds like the file you want is tiki-top_bar.tpl or something) in tikiwiki/templates/ and then copy that file over to tikiwiki/templates/styles/thestyleyoureusing/.

Basically, a big part of the "look" of tikiwiki is from the template files. However, to editing the template file directly in tikiwiki/templates/ would affect all stylesheets (that don't have their own copy of the file). Thus, you must copy it over to the stylesheet you're using so that the changes you make have a smaller scale.

By the way, if you want to edit the CSS file, go to tikiwiki/styles/yourstylesheet.css. By convention, I believe any images you want to include in the stylesheet should be under tikiwiki/styles/yourstylesheet/yourimages.gif
