Issue modifying pagetitle

I'd like to modify the appearance of the element *H1 class=pagetitle* in "the news" (TW 3.0)

When I add this to my custom option css

.pagetitle { font-size:12px;color:#333333;
}

it changes the font-size, but not the color. (so at least I know it's recognizing the option)

Any suggestions on how to get more complete control over this element's appearance would be appreciated (I'd like to use italic, too).

Thanks!

Thanks for input. I applied all of these to my thenews "option" css (targeting
the wiki page title element) with these results:

H1 a.pagetitle { font-size: 0.5em;color:#555555; } NO EFFECT

H1 a.pagetitle:visited { font-size: 0.5em;color:#555555; } NO EFFECT

H1 .pagetitle { font-size: 2.5em;color:#555555; } NO EFFECT

H1 {font-size: 0.8em;color:#555555;font-weight:normal;color:red;} CHANGES SIZE ONLY

.wikitext h1 {font-size: 0.8em;color:red;} CHANGES PAGE TITLE SIZE ONLY

.pagetitle { font-size: 0.8em;color:red; } CHANGES SIZE ONLY

Any further help with this would be appreciated.
Thanks!

The page title's CSS selector is

h1.pagetitle a

The theme stylesheet, thenews.css, specifies color and text decoration for

a, a:link, and a:visited,

so possibly you'd have to indicate

h1.pagetitle a,
h1.pagetitle a:link,
h1.pagetitle a:visited

to style the page title completely. Keep in mind that the priority of styles in CSS involves specificity, so the more specifically you define the selector, the more likely the properties that you want will be applied.

I highly recommend using Firefox and the Firebug add-on to examine web pages like these to see what CSS is being used for each item on the page.

(Also, to Rick, the page title CSS selectors were changed slightly a few releases back - don't ask me why - so it's probably the pre-change arrangement that you have in mind.)

Gary's answer worked; CSS education also appreciated. Thanks much!
